Long celebrated as a mecca of modernist skyscrapers, Chicago and its suburbs are also home to a great many modernist houses. Designed by Mies, Paul Schweikher, John Vinci, and more, these houses served as experimental playgrounds for modern architects in the development of a new domestic lifestyle – an approach that brought glass, steel, and new types of brick to the masses.

In this tour, Professor Michelangelo Sabatino (IIT College of Architecture and co-author of Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929-75) and I will explore nine modernist houses in Chicago and its suburbs. We’ll dig into the context, clients, and innovative use of materials that make these unsung houses important milestones of modernist architecture.

Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929-75 by Susan Benjamin and Michelangelo Sabatino is a tremendous resource and can be purchased online here.
