On this tour, in collaboration with photographer Jay Simon, we looked at the history behind the buildings and communities that built North Lawndale. Learn about the way the buildings were designed, how they were used by different generations, and celebrate the community that makes North Lawndale a thriving place. This tour features detailed architectural photos as well as video interviews with the people who use these buildings and make them what they are.

The tour features:

  • Stone Temple Baptist Church - built as a Romanian Jewish synagogue, it became an epicenter of civil rights activism and played host to MLK during his Chicago Freedom Movement.

  • Firehouse Community Arts Center - Built as a fire station in 1915 it has twins all over the city. The Center is a pillar of the Lawndale community.

  • Features on several long standing businesses, their buildings, proprietors, and their legacies in North Lawndale.

  • And more!
